What is the North York Obedience Club? It is a place where people can take training classes, build new skills, and strengthen the bond they share with their dogs. But it is also much more than that. NYOC is a welcoming community of people brought together by a shared love of dogs, learning, and spending time with others who understand that passion. In other words, NYOC is both a place to train with your dog and a community to belong to.

Why Join NYOC?
NYOC has been serving dog owners throughout the Greater Toronto Area since 1961. As a not-for-profit organization, our goal has always been to help people build positive, rewarding relationships with their dogs.
Our members come from all walks of life. Some have purebred dogs, some have mixed breeds, and many have both. A few of us even have cats! Most of our events are open to the public, but members enjoy additional opportunities, early registration, and access to special programs throughout the year.
No matter what you hope to do with your dog—whether that’s learning basic manners, exploring dog sports, volunteering in the community, or simply having fun together—you’ll find people at NYOC who are happy to help.

In 1965, NYOC members formed a Demonstration Team to share the joy of dog training with the public. Team performances showcase the partnership, trust, and communication that can develop between a dog and handler.
Since then, the team has performed more than 1,000 times at hospitals, retirement residences, libraries, community centres, children’s programs, and many other public venues.
The Demonstration Team welcomes both new and long-time members. It’s a wonderful way to give back to the community while having fun with your dog.

Step Into the Ring
NYOC hosts Obedience and Rally Trials where dogs and handlers can put their training to the test in a supportive, welcoming environment. These events bring together competitors from across the Greater Toronto Area and beyond for exciting weekends of teamwork and friendly competition.
Whether you are an experienced competitor, preparing for your first trial, or simply curious about dog sports, NYOC trials offer a great opportunity to learn, connect, and celebrate what dogs and their handlers can accomplish together.

I have been a member of NYOC for 40 odd years and, in addition to the excellent training they offer, I would like to highlight the wonderful social experience.
Over the years I have made long lasting special friendships through being a club member. Our dogs brought us together but we have many other shared interests.
From going to ‘Dog Camps’ (great fun as well as a learning experience) to great NYOC parties and of course as a member of the K-9 Demo Team bringing joy to folk in nursing homes and senior residences.
The best thing I did for myself and my dogs was to become a part of NYOC.

NYOC has been my go-to for puppy classes for multiple dogs now. The classes are well run and the instructors are great. We also gave Rally-O a try this time around, which my dog and I have enjoyed. HiI love being a member of NYOC. After taking classes for years, I have made some lovely friends at NYOC. The club has a great education program where speakers are invited to share their knowledge about dogs, training, traveling with dogs, all sorts of health questions and more. These are delivered over Zoom so we enjoy them in the comfort of our homes. if you are interested in trials and titles, NYOC runs 2 CKC-registered trials per year. It is fun to help out or participate. There is something here for everyone who loves dogs!
I started out taking training classes with NYOC and found them useful and enjoyable. They opened up a whole new world for me my dog.
I also joined NYOC early on. As a club member, I participated in the Demonstration team for years. I also helped out at trials and various other events but the best part was making some very good friends. I am still a member even though at this point, I don’t have a dog!
My dog Jojo and I love our Obedience classes at NYOC. The instructors are knowledgeable and helpful, the classes are well run and engaging – we’re having a blast!
Both Sandy and I thoroughly enjoy our Rally evenings. Participating in Rally improves our bond and gives me ideas for training him during the week. Sandy is quite big and I have no chance of tiring his body. Challenging his brain in addition to his walks gives him a “job” – he sleeps well on Rally nights.

How much does membership cost?

Do I have to be a member of NYOC to take their training classes?
No, you do not have to become a member of NYOC in order to take training classes. Our classes are open to members and non-members. However, there are some advantages to becoming a member such as being able to register for classes a week before non-members.
Do I have to volunteer in order to keep up my membership?
No, you do not have to volunteer to stay a member but it is a great way to make friends, and to learn informally about dog training and trialling.
Do I get a discount on classes if I am a member?
There is no discount for simply being a member of the club. However, club members can apply for training classes a week before the general public. This is often important as some of our classes fill up very quickly.
Do I have to be a club member to be on the K-9 Demonstration Team?
Yes, for insurance purposes, you have to be a club member in order to be on the Demonstration Team.
Do I have to be an NYOC member to volunteer at a trial or other events?
No. We have several people who are not members of NYOC but who volunteer regularly at the trials.
Why would I be a member if I am not going to take classes?
You might want to be on the K-9 Demonstration Team. You may have made a number of friends in the club while you were taking training classes and you might want to stay in touch with them. You might also have become a ‘life member” (see below). Some people leave the club and then come back and join when they have a new dog they want to train.
Do members get a discount at NYOC trials?
No, sadly there is no discount at NYOC trials for club members.
Trials don’t usually make money so they are not inclined to give discounts.
What is a life-time member?
Once you have belonged to NYOC for 30 years, you become a life member. This means you may continue to belong to the club without needing to pay the annual membership fees any more.
