I love my dogs because they give me lots of love and companionship. When I am unhappy or depressed, they seem to sense it and come over and make me feel better. They have given me a new way to give back to the community that isn’t selling tickets or raising money for charity.

I became a member of NYOC on January 01, 1997. Over the years I have owned many dogs and could tell stories about all of them. Unfortunately, my space here has been limited so here is just a taste of my life with dogs.

I did my first basic obedience classes with a Doberman called Shasta at NYOC years ago in the church basement.

Then there was a Golden Retriever, Jamie, who came into his own as a St. John Ambulance therapy dog. He worked at the Markham Stouffville Hospital, various schools and Participation House in Markham. He completed over 500 visits in all.

Kennie was a Wire Hair Dachshund, Victory’s Mackenzie CDX, AGX, JE, RAE. She lived a full life until she was almost fourteen. Kennie continued to love walks in the fields and went swimming whenever she could right up to the end. She had an illustrious career for a Dachshund to say the least. She loved agility and only retired completely from it a year before she passed away. Kennie was the first Dachshund in Canada to get an AGX and an ATCHC. She also got a CDX in both Canada and in the USA. She loved going to ground to chase and bark at critters. In her later years, Kennie took up rally obedience. I thought it would be fun for her as you can talk to your dog all the time. When we were on the final stretch of the RAE, Kennie went totally deaf and we finished with hand signals only! Once again, she was the first Dachshund to attain this CKC title.

My German Shepherd, Kavik, has a CD, TDX, and a UTD. He loves tracking and is working at his UTDX title, which will make him a tracking champion. I also do Shutzhund work with him, which he also enjoys, especially the protection part. He loves kids and they all love playing with him.

Dexter is another Wire Hair Dachshund. He got married a couple of years back in a formal ceremony in our local park. He married Lakota, who lives in Florida and Buffalo. The wedding was blessed with a litter of eight puppies born in Florida two years ago. Mich, a son of Dexter and Lakota, lives with me now. He is in obedience and agility classes and hopefully will start competing next year. He loves tracking and is almost ready to earn a TD.

Cairo and I like to go for early morning walks. (Actually, I frequently have to drag Cairo out of bed but once he gets going, he enjoys himself.) I have found many places even in the city where Cairo can be off leash. He enjoys the various smells, or the mad chasing after a squirrel; occasionally he finds a dead salmon or a live mouse to supplement his breakfast. I find walking in wooded areas to be like a meditation; I come back feeling refreshed and alive. I have also enjoyed canoeing with Cairo and my husband. Some of our favourite stories involve canoeing after beaver with Cairo barking in excitement. These are the only times that Cairo ever chooses to swim; he has been known to leap out of the canoe in hot pursuit of a swimming beaver. He has even been known to fall out of the canoe in his excitement. But nothing dampens Cairo’s spirit for more than 30 seconds.

Rusty, my current large Pomeranian had only been with us for nine months, when he already completed his CD, “first three in a row!”

NYOC is where it all started for me. I came with my first Bichon, Mandy, just for her to learn to be a well behaved dog. By the time she earned her CDX in Canada and the US, I knew there was no looking back. I have met some great mentors and got lots of advice over the years. I have also participated in NYOC by helping out at a couple of trials and taught classes from Beginner to Open.

I have recently completed a short book called Biscuit, the Love Story of a Rescue Dog. It is about our last Pom, whom we only had two years before he died at age ten of heart disease. Obedience gets a whole chapter in the book, and NYOC is mentioned and acknowledged several times!

While living in England, I was involved in several rescue organizations and at one point shared my life with six Boxers at the same one time. The most memorable was a white female with natural ears, Charlotte, Charlie for short. Then, over the years, there was a Welsh Cardigan Corgi, Maude, a Great Dane, Brutus, and many others who came for short stays. For several years while living in Devon, I house-sat for part of the year, for a Canadian family who lived in a lovely thatched roof house with six Irish Wolfhounds and a Border Collie. I thoroughly I enjoyed all of this, as did my own dogs who accompanied me.

In Toronto, my first dog was Sadie who had been abandoned in an apartment when the people moved out. She was an oversized (125 lbs. when full grown, and thin!) Old English Sheepdog with her tail intact. The vet thought she was around six months old. She lived to be thirteen, added more adventures to my life than I could have ever imagined and stuck with me through a long illness and kept me sane during that time. Until I got my first Irish Water Spaniel, I was pretty sure she was the smartest dog I had ever met! In addition to Irish Water Spaniels, I had one shaggy, grey 85 lb mystery dog whom I found at the cottage when he jumped into the back seat of my car shortly before my 40th birthday. He had obviously been abandoned because we had seen him near the cottage several times before he popped into my van and our lives.

I remember the first time I heard about the North York Obedience Club from my dad. He told me about how he and his brother took their two dogs, Dinah and Jammer, to this obedience club. The story about North York Obedience Club came about because we were thinking about getting a dog and talking about who was going to train it. No one else volunteered in my family, so all the eyes went to me and I said, “Why not, I’ll do it!” After this moment, I began to think why did I just volunteer to do this? Why am I the one stuck going to these classes?

When I first took my dog, Dinah, to the club she was hyper, jumpy and extremely playful. She would try to run away if you were trying to get her. After a few weeks in Anne’s beginner class, Dinah’s behaviour started to change. By the end of all of the classes, Dinah and I were asked to join the Demonstration Team. What the Demonstration Team does puts smiles and joy into people’s lives. Without the North York Obedience Club there would be fewer smiles and joy going around.
